Biking for weight loss
Biking is a wonderful aerobic exercise that can help you meet your
weight loss goals. And it can make you feel like a kid again!
Any weight loss program should include exercise, and biking may be
just the exercise you need - whether you go mountain biking on remote
trails or ride your bike to the local grocery store. This form of exercise,
like walking, gets you out of the house, away from the TV and all those
chores that steal so much time, and can be enjoyed with your entire
family. Why should kids have all the fun?
Biking for weight loss doesn't have to be expensive.
There's no question about it - a good mountain bike can cost a lot
of money. If you haven't ridden a bicycle for years, it may be a good
idea to borrow a bike from a friend. In fact it would be a great idea
to borrow the friend, too - because biking is much more fun when you
go with someone else.
You can also find bikes at thrift stores, although they may not be
the latest model, and my not have all the bells and whistles that are
found on newer bikes. Before buying a used bike, be sure to see how
much any repair or maintenance may cost.
Since mountain bikes are now all the rage, you can often find perfectly
serviceable 10-speed in the want-ads for much less than they cost when
new.
The biggest muscles in your body are in your legs and buttocks, and
these are exactly the muscles used in biking. That means that the aerobic
benefits for weight loss are very good, although your upper body may
not receive a full workout.
One of the best ways to stay motivated for regular biking trips is
to sign up for a charity ride - you'll know that the ride is coming
up, and that you'll need to be in shape for it. Giving yourself a deadline
is a great way to make yourself get out of the house and get on your
bike - the weight loss is almost a secondary benefit. One excellent
group that offers charity rides is the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program.
