Hiking for weight loss
Hiking is a perfect exercise for weight loss, if you are fit enough
to walk the trails. You get the opportunity to be outside listening
to the birds singing, breathing clean air. You can find solitude that
is difficult to acheive in the city. And you feel like you've returned
to your roots - doing something that you used to love to do, but just
haven't had time for in years.
Start hiking on easy trails close to your home, to get your muscles
and heart back in shape. As you get more lung capacity and strength,
add a knapsack and head for nearby streams and foothills. Leave the
rugged mountain trails for a few months, until you're really ready for
them. Don't worry - all the time you spend getting back in shape is
helping you lose weight, too.

Hiking is a wonderful aerobic exercise, and will not only help you
lose weight - it will also keep you trim after you've reached your ideal
weight. You don't need much in the way of equipment - although you may
sink some money into a tent and heavy-duty backpack if you get excited
enough to take some overnight trips.
Remember to take the precautions needed whenever you head out on the
trail:
- take plenty of water and lightweight snacks
- wear good shoes that are designed for the terrain - leave your sandals
at home
- make sure to let someone know where you're going, and when they
should expect you to be home
- dress in layers, so you'll be able to shed the sweater when the
day gets warmer
- be aware of any critters that may need to be avoided - if you're
visiting grizzly country, you don't want to go out walking alone
