Running for weight loss

Running can be a wonderful exercise for weight loss, and for maintaining your weight after you've slimmed down. But running isn't for the timid or terribly out of shape.

If you are very much overweight, or if you have had a history of knee or foot injuries, walking would be a much better way to start on a weight loss program. After you get the go-ahead from your doctor, begin your running program.

Running is a high-impact sport, especially if you're overweight or out of shape. That can mean injuries to your knees and feet. On the other hand, running is far more enjoyable than working out at the gym or doing exercises at home. And you get that famous runner's high to reward you for your persistence.

The best way to get motivated to keep with your running program is to sign up for a marathon your city - or really push yourself and sign up for the marathon in Hawaii or Boston. You don't have to win the marathon - you just have to finish it. If you sign up for a charity event through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program (or other worthy cause) and collect pledges, you've got a double incentive to get out and run.

Not only will you make money for a worthy cause, but you could end up with one of those beautiful runner's bodies - slim, sleek, and graceful.
