Swimming for weight loss.
Swimming is one of the best exercises for weight loss - especially
if you have difficulty with other exercise programs. The water will
protect you from most injuries, yet add resistance to help build muscle
mass.
There are some suggestions that swimming, especially in colder water
or unheated pools, may actually prevent weight loss. The theory is that
the body will add fat to it's outer layer in order to keep the body
afloat - which is not what you're looking for.
However, many people discover that swimming is the only exercise that
they can do safely - because they've let themselves get too out of shape,
or because their excess weight puts too much strain on their knees,
feet and back for walking or aerobics.

Another excellent reason to use swimming in your weight loss program
is the company - almost all gyms that have a pool also offer special
classes for people who are older or out of shape. Some YWCA's even have
classes specifically for women who have had mastectomies, women who
are pregnant, and women who are overweight. YMCA's are likely to have
special programs for less-athletic men.
Getting into a swimsuit can be traumatic even if you're a size 5 -
many of us have body images that keep us hiding in gigantic sweatshirts.
Join a group of people who look like you, and you'll soon discover that
nobody cares about your lumps - it's all about having fun and getting
fit.
