Walking for weight loss

Many people agree that walking is one of the best exercises for weight loss. With the possible exeption of swimming, no other exercise has less potential for injury to out-of-shape bodies. And no other exercise is less expensive - all you need is a pair of good shoes and a safe place to walk.

Some runners believe that walking is only for people who can't run. But many doctors believe you can lose weight, and improve your heart's health, by adding just twenty minutes of walking to your day. And brisk walking can actually work up a nice sweat, work your largest muscles, and burn plenty of fat.

Walking is one of the easiest exercises to use for weight loss - simply because it's a normal mode of transportation for able-bodied people. Unless you are disabled it is highly likely that you do quite a bit of walking every day already. Even if it's just a trip from your desk to the candy machine.

To make walking work for weight loss you'll need to increase both the time you spend walking and the intensity. Most of us slow down as we get older and heavier. A slow saunter won't work off any fat. Start challenging yourself to move faster than the pace that has become normal for you - make faster walking your new norm. Park farther from your job, take your dog on a brisk walk around two blocks instead of one. Even little improvements like this can start to make a difference.

As your fitness improves, you'll find yourself walking when you would have driven your car before - you'll discover how much fun it is to travel by foot. You'll see more of your neighborhood, meet more people, and feel more connected. And you'll also start feeling lighter - because walking really is a great way to lose weight!
